Brrr…it’s cold out there!

With temperatures plunging below zero, and the forecast calling for snowy conditions, it’s safe to say that winter has officially landed in Utah. Now, while there is no doubt in our minds that a wintry white landscape is both beautiful and lovely, it also imperative that you take some winter safety precautions to ensure that you’re able to enjoy your holidays without incident.

Winter Safety Tips to Live By

Tip #1 – Bundle Up to Stay Warm

When the weather gets cold, staying warm – especially while outside, becomes imperative. It is advisable during the winter that you bundle up. Start by adding lots of lightweight layers (but not so much that you won’t be able to move) and top with a heavy sweater or winter jacket.

Don’t forget to add the finishing touches to your wardrobe. This may or may not include donning a hat, scarf, snow pants, thick wool socks and high-insulated boots. Now that you’re ready to braze the weather why not go take down your opponent in a snowball fight?

Tip #2 – Don’t Forget about Your Pets

According to the ASPCA, during the winter months it’s just as important for your four legged friends to be inside as it is for you, rather than out in the cold. You should also ensure they remain properly hydrated and that they are kept on a leash during short but brisk walks.

Another good thing to remember, especially if you have outdoor cats or just a lot of strays, is to check under your vehicles’ hood before driving away as they tend to hide in that location due to the warmth it provides. You should also never leave your dog (or cat for that matter) alone in a car.

Tip #3 – Protect Your Pipes from Freezing

Unlike most liquids, which shrink when they are cooled, water expands as it freezes. The problem with this is that the expansion puts a tremendous amount of pressure on your pipes (metal or plastic). This can then cause your pipes to burst which can ultimately add up to costly repair.

The best ways for you to prevent your pipes from freezing include:

  • Allow the cold water to drip from the faucet served by exposed pipes.
  • Keep your thermostat set at the same temperature day and night.
  • Leave the heat on in your home, even if you plan on being away.
  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinets as this will allow warm air to circulate throughout these areas. Just remember to move any chemicals.

Tip #4 – Heat Your Home Safely

Do you plan on using a space heater? Make sure you place it on a level surface that is three feet away from anything that may be flammable. Turn off space heaters whenever you plan on leaving a room. Never use your stove or oven for the purpose of heating your home.

If you plan on heating your home the old fashioned way (with a fireplace that is), always use a glass or metal fire screen, which is large enough to catch any stray away embers. And, if you haven’t already, make sure to contact a reputable HVAC repair company for an annual furnace tune-up.
